SKIING IN LA TANIA AND THE THREE VALLEES
La Tania is located in The Courchevel valley at 1400 metres and first opened in 1992, in preparation for the Winter Olympics and is a true ski to door resort offering a friendly relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. It is a pedestrian only village which makes it particularly safe for children. The village has its own cinema, tourist office, supermarket, post office, cash point as well as a good selection of restaurants and bars including the famous Pub Le Ski Lodge. Several of the local bars have live bands on a few evenings a week and for apres ski.
The modern 12 person Tania gondola links with a chairlift to take you to the Col de la Loze taking you to slopes above Courchevel 1850 and Meribel and directly into The Trois Vallees system. There are snow cannons all of the way down Plan Fontaine, the green run, through the pine forest and Folyeres, the rolling tree lined blue run which both wind their way down into La Tania village ensuring excellent snow cover all season long from December through to April.
For non skiers there are snow shoe walks through the National Parks with a guide who will point out various points of interest and animal tracks. You may even be lucky enough to see chamois or ibex. Also available are husky sledging, paragliding and skidoo and hot air balloon rides, all of which can be arranged for you. There is a small gym, swimming pool and sauna located in the Montana Hotel in the village which is open in the afternoons and evening for non residents. Ice skating and ten pin bowling are both available in Courchevel 1850.
The Trois Vallees
The Trois Vallees is reputed to be one of the Worlds largest and best ski areas as it is so varied, extensive and snow sure due to the resorts height and aspect. It comprises 5 resorts - Courchevel which is three villages in one, each named after their height in metres above sea level so 1850, 1650 and Le Praz, La Tania, Meribel, Les Menuires and Val Thorens A free ski bus service runs all day and late into the night round all of the Courchevel villages and La Tania. The three Valleys boasts 600km of marked runs, 200 direct ski lifts, over 1230 snow canons, endless off piste and a tremendous amount of skiing for all abilities.
Snow conditions are almost guaranteed to be good from early December until late April due to the resorts aspect, altitude and snow making facilities.
There really are slopes to suit everyone. There is an amazing choice of meticulously prepared green and blue pistes for beginners and some superb runs through the trees towards La Tania. There are long open sweeping pistes on the Combe de Saulire and Creux and some excellent motorway skiing in Courchevel 1650 for intermediate skiers. For experts, the coulouirs have some of the steepest skiing in the Alps and good bumps are always available on Chanrossa, Marmottes and Suisse. The choice is almost endless which is why people come back to the Three Valleys time and time again.
For snowboarders there is a fun park in Courchevel 1850 and Meribel with a half pipe, kickers and plenty of jumps.
Even in high season the well designed lift system is capable of transporting 230,000 skiers per hour making lift queues almost unheard of. Whatever your standard you are sure to be spoilt for choice in Courchevel and La Tania.
